In honor of one of my favorite days of the year, I am maintaining a massive spreadsheet of 138 NFL Free Agents. It will track ultimately who they sign with. Hopefully, for those few who read this blog, this post can operate as your one stop shop for tracking free agency. I hope you enjoy Pittsburgh's Native Son's 1st Annual Free Agency Smorgasbord!

Peyton Manning a Bronco?

Out of nowhere, the Denver Broncos have become major contenders for now former Colts Quarterback Peyton Manning. This calls into question Denver’s entire philosophy, a philosophy that allowed the team to get to the Playoffs. However going from and errant, but surprisingly devastating passer in Tim Tebow to the precision of 4 time MVP Peyton Manning would represent a major upgrade. This article will look into the philosophy change that Denver would have to go through in order to accommodate Peyton Manning and in addition discuss the feasibility of this move.

2011 Denver



2011 Denver was built on running the ball and elite defense with a little big play passing thrown in. Denver won a lot of games with this simple formula. They didn’t make Tim Tebow throw 30-40 passes a game, but they had him carry the rock with carry totals higher than many NFL running backs. If Peyton Manning came into Denver there are a few questions and concerns people will have about how this team will work.

Denver doesn’t have the elite pass catchers Peyton manning will need for a high powered offense.



Wrong. Denver does have a surprisingly high powered group, but they never get used because Denver has had the likes of Orton and Tebow passing to them. Demariyus Thomas is a future star as indicated by his late season surge. Imagine what he could be with Peyton Manning behind center. Also, since when does Peyton Manning need elite talent? Look at the Colts’ wideouts this year. Tell me Peyton Manning didn’t make them look better than they proved to be. Plus, Peyton and Reggie Wayne would likely be a package deal. Throw in a rehabbing Knowshon Moreno who has solid pass catching ability and recent cap casualty Dallas Clark who could represent, at the very least, fill the roster spot of recently suspended tight end Virgil Greene. At that point look out because you have a VERY promising receiver corps in Thomas, Wayne, Clark, and Moreno.

John Fox has always relied on running the ball



This is true. Fox in Carolina turned away opportunities to acquire elite QB talent and forced Panther fans to endure a few too many years of Jake Delhomme. However, do you know the main reason John Fox implements offenses that rush to the point of excess? He is a defensive coach. Running the ball eats clock and keeps defenses fresh. Fox’s playoff teams have all had borderline elite defenses that shutdown opponents allowing the rushing attack to pound away at opposing defenses until they break. Having an elite QB under center would mean John Fox would have to change offensive philosophies, but quite frankly being able to put up 28+ points offensively would be a fresh change from his offenses, like Denver’s last year, that put up 10+. John Fox could let his defense on the field a little longer knowing Manning would be on the field soon capable of quick strike retaliation. The presence of Manning also makes the opposing offense feel the pressure to keep up reducing the burden on the defense. I would like to close this point mentioning that even if John Fox wants to run the ball a little more than Peyton may be used to, for a rehabbing QB that is not a bad thing whatsoever.

Why trade away a playoff QB for an injured Peyton Manning?



The Denver Broncos made it the playoffs with little to no passing game. The Denver defense carried this team through on multiple occasions. That defense will not have changed and if anything can get reloaded and improved with another offseason under John Fox. Tebow is not what got Denver to the playoffs, they got their in spite of Tebow. Peyton Manning is said to be well on the path to full recovery. If true, Denver has an offensive line capable of keeping him protected and a defense to take this team far. With Tim Tebow, Denver has a playoff team….with Peyton Manning…Denver could have a Super Bowl team. Thus, Manning would bring significant offensive philosophy changes, but those changes ultimately would not alter the course for a team that saw success come from an elite defense. Hence, those games that Denver couldn’t keep up offensively are altered considerably with Manning behind center and that represents a definitive upgrade.

Will Manning actually become a Bronco?

That is tough to say. The Redskins are obviously out given their recent acquisition of the 2nd Overall, but Miami and Arizona constitute two teams that Manning would likely go to. Denver plays in a cold weather, outdoor stadium at a higher altitude. These are all turnoffs to a QB trying to stay healthy after a nasty neck injury. Miami represents a warm weather town, but it is also a media circus and has Tom Brady and blitz happy Rex Ryan. I can’t imagine Miami is the most ideal location, but it does have Brandon Marshall to throw to.

Arizona plays in warm weather and a dome, much more suited to Peyton’s talents. Plus, Arizona has Larry Fitzgerald who, no offense to Demaryius Thomas, presents much better receiver talent than Denver offers. Also the competition in the form of Seattle and a rebuilding St. Louis would mean only San Fran stands in Manning’s road to the playoffs. Subsequently, my money is on Peyton choosing Arizona ultimately. Keeping Miami and Denver on the hook allows Manning to get the best offer possible from Arizona. This article may seem like a waste of time if I am making this pick, but this article’s purpose was not to argue why Manning will be a Bronco. Rather, this article involved laying out the argument that Manning would fit in at Denver and make them a Super Bowl contending team. For the reasons I have provided Peyton Manning would make an excellent Broncos team much better. So, if this does happen, what happens to the man on the right?

Randy Moss: He'd Like To Call It A Comeback

Randy Moss is reportedly working out for one team this week. As such, it seems as good a time as any to discuss what teams could make a run at the future Hall of Famer and his impact on those rosters. Moss stipulates that he can still run a 4.35-4.38 40. In addition he is willing to take a contract with no guaranteed money to prove that he is about football, not money. If Moss still has his speed and can put forth actual effort, look for some team to make a steal similar to the 4th round pick the Pats used to get Moss way back when. The question is what team is going to give Moss a shot?

I have listed the teams according to likelihood they would sign Moss, starting with the most likely. In between, we will pause for reflection on the teams Moss has played for...however briefly.



Good Beginnings, Bad Ending:
As We Begin our Journey so does Moss. Here is his first stop in Minnesota where he and Daunte Culpepper neared legend status. They could have been Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison, but alas it was not meant to be.


1. New York Jets

Moss has been strongly linked to the Jets who want to find a dynamic replacement for Plaxico Burress. I think the Jets will inevitably turn to Braylon Edwards, but having Moss on the squad would be nice…for the other Jets wide receivers because there is little chance that Sanchez is going to be able to consistently get the ball to Moss when he hasn’t been able to do so with the likes of Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards.

2. Chicago

Cutler NEEDS a dynamic #1 wide receiver. There are no if ands or buts about it. If Chicago lets another year pass with Cutler trying to make Hester and Knox into #1s, Chicago is going to remain the third best team in the NFC North. From what I have heard, Bears OC Mike Tice has a good rapport with Moss despite the first blowup Moss had at Minnesota when Tice was on staff. If Moss went to Chicago Jay Cutler could return to his Denver days as an elite QB.

3. Tampa Bay

New Head Coach Greg Schiano may want to install a power run game, but adding Moss to operate opposite Mike Williams may be very tempting for a Tampa Bay team needing to generate some buzz.

4. Detroit

Imagine the headache combo of Calvin Johnson and Randy Moss with Stafford’s arm. Who do you cover? Already teams have to shift double and triple coverage in order to moderately cover Megatron. With Moss around defenses will be unable to slide coverage fully to Megatron. A move like this could put Detroit on the road to a deep playoff run.



Moss Raids Oakland's Payroll:
Moss and Oakland did not get along in the least. Al Davis traded for one of the NFL's fastest, but gave this speedster Kerry Collins as a QB. This did not end well as Moss phoned it in for a paycheck...a sad tradition in Moss' career.

5. Baltimore

The Ravens claim to need a deep threat, why I am not sure given the development and promise of Torrey Smith. Nevertheless they claim to need one and are pretty cash strapped. Bringing in Randy Moss could help them maybe get over that hump of close playoff losses…maybe…

6. San Francisco

Lots of people say San Fran is going to target a deep threat, which is a need, but Alex Smith is hesitant to let the long ball loose to anybody not named Vernon Davis. Smith is a big time trust QB. He only regularly throws to people he trusts. Give him somebody dynamic like Moss who can catch anything awkwardly thrown and the 49ers could secure an actual deep passing game.

7. Philadelphia

The Eagles are rumored to be interested in signing Plaxico Burress and trading Desean Jackson. Why not bring in a player with Jackson’s speed and Burress’ height?

8. New Orleans

Rumors had flashed that Moss was going to join the Saints last year, but nothing ever came of it. If this bounty business results in player suspensions, then much of the Saints defense is going to be gone and the offense will have to pick up the slack. Having a Brees/Moss could be devastating enough to compensate for the lack of defense. Plus, Moss could help ease the seemingly impending loss of Colston.



So Close and Yet So Far:
In New England Randy Moss broke Jerry Rice's single season touchdown record while almost achieving Super Bowl glory. However, shortly after this mind blowing touchdown the Pats parted with Moss and not on good terms.

9. Houston

The Texans desperately need to get a wide receiver to operate opposite Andre Johnson/fill in when Johnson is hurt. Moss could be the High end wideout needed to help the Texans attain back to back playoff berths.

10. Jacksonville

This would be the big splash move the new Jaguars ownership could be looking to make, but it is unlikely Moss would pick a team in a major rebuild with terrible QB prospects. Mike Mularkey may be in town, but so is Blaine Gabbert and that hinders any possibility of Moss making a phenomenal return.

11. San Diego

AJ Smith may be putting the franchise tag on Jackson yet again. If however Jackson hits the free agent market, then the Chargers could turn to Randy Moss to operate as a cheap replacement and deep threat to fill in the time when Rivers isn’t throwing to Gates.

12. St. Louis

Jeff Fisher pulled the trigger on snatching Moss off the waiver wire at the end of his Titan coaching tenure. It would not be out of the realm of reason for the Rams to take a shot and give Sam Bradford a much needed target, and Steven Jackson his first ever seven man front.



Favre and Moss Or The Story of What Could Have Been:
When Moss got traded to the Brett Favre led Vikings I was pumped and traded away Brandon Marshall and Anquan Boldin to get Moss on my team. This touchdown aside, the trade did not really work out for either of us. I still think the Vikes should have fired Childress before Moss, but what do I know.

13/14. Washington/Cleveland

Randy Moss would have to be desperate to sign with either of these teams before seeing what they do to fix their QB situations. If Peyton/Flynn ends up at one of these teams a cheap Randy Moss would help add a weapon to these rosters in great need of offensive firepower.

15. Buffalo

Stevie Johnson is going to be expensive to retain, but ultimately I think Buffalo goes ahead and brings the wideout back. However, adding Randy Moss could help put a team that suffered considerably after the loss of Fred Jackson in contention for the AFC East. At the very least it would keep Buffalo competitive in a division that may be adding Peyton Manning.

16. Indianapolis

If the Colts clean house like most believe, bringing in low risk contract like Moss may help compensate for the bumps that rookie QB Andrew Luck will experience. Also, this becomes a stronger possibility as Pierre Garcon plays hardball with the Colts.

17. Arizona

Arizona is very cash strapped and any cheap player needs to be discussed. If the Cards are discussing bringing in Peyton, I doubt Moss comes along, but if the plan is to stay with Kolb…a Moss/Fitzgerald combo may be too tempting to pass up.



They Told Him to go to Nashville:
A desperate Titans squad turned to Randy Moss and although he made almost no in game impact, the Titans swear up and down that he was an excellent teammate. Teams willing to take a chance on Moss need to hope that the 2010 season was a humbling experience for Moss and that his off the field behavior in Tennessee is duplicated in their club.

18. Seattle

Seattle spent big money on now injury prone Sidney Rice. In order to get this offense off the ground a wide receiver like Moss may be necessary. However, I am sure Moss would wait to see Seattle’s plans to improve their QB situation before signing with a near end of rebuilding phase Seattle.

19. Carolina

Moss, Steve Smith, and Cam Newton would be a nasty combo that would put Carolina in competition for the NFC South. This would be a nice grab by the Panthers especially if the Saints defenders get hindered/suspended by league discipline for their bounty scheme.

20. New England

This could be slightly possible given the return of Josh McDaniels, but a reunion is very unlikely. The Pats will look for younger deep threats that don’t have questionable history.

21. Pittsburgh

Todd Haley likes to work with tall wide receivers who can get down field (evidence Owens, Fitzgerald, Bowe, and Baldwin) a role Moss would fulfill and then some. Also, given the potential for Mike Wallace’s departure and the Steelers’ delicate cap situation a no money down contract would be very beneficial. Not to mention Moss could decoy defenses much like Wallace did while giving the Steeler offense a tall red zone target they have been needing since Plaxico Burress left in 2005. The hindrance is Moss’ history, but to fill a roster spot for very little money, it may not hurt for the Steelers to kick Moss’ tires.

I will be anxiously seeing who decides to work out Moss this week and if his 40 time is as promised. Until then speculation we will just have to wait. However, I am excited at the prospect of a Randy Moss return. Football just wasn’t the same this past season without Peyton manning, Brett Favre, Terrell Owens, and Randy Moss. However, Moss does have a checkered past and any sort of slipup or lackluster effort on Moss' part needs to me met by a very swift pinkslip. Moss' talent and ability to entertain allows him a comeback attempt...it does not permit him to ruin a roster.

Mike Wallace: Should He Stay or Should He Go Now?

A scenario has been brought up on numerous occasions where the Steelers tender Mike Wallace as a Restricted Free Agent and subsequently get a 1st Round pick from some team in need of a deep threat, like San Fran, Baltimore, New England, and Cincinnati. At first I shot this down as nonsense, but the more I think about the more doing so makes sense:

1. Mike Wallace’s Production

Wallace’s production took a steep decline in the second half of the season. In the first 9 games of the season, the speed demon got 868 yards and 6 Touchdowns from 47 receptions. After that Wallace collected 325 yards and 2 touchdowns from 25 receptions. The two touchdowns came against Cincinnati, so Wallace went 5 straight games, including the playoffs, without scoring a touchdown or coming close to a 100 yard receiving game. Some will argue that this lack of production was the direct result of Ben Roethlisberger’s injury, but all things considered, defenses began game planning against Wallace which made him relatively invisible. One can argue Bruce Arians' system could have been impacting Wallace’s production, but overall Wallace stalled in the second half and getting a first round pick from a player with declining production that seemingly lacks a complex route tree would not be all that bad.

2. Antonio Brown Stepped Up

Wallace’s production dipped and Antonio Brown kept this offense moving. He received team MVP for a reason. Some will contend that Brown did well because teams game planned to stop Wallace allowing Brown the opportunities, but I have two problems with that argument. First, some of the catches Brown was forced to make were so acrobatic and in the midst of such tight coverage that I find it hard to believe he was given free roam. Second, Brown demonstrated that he is willing to lay out and be the receiver this team needs. I do not always see that same spark in Wallace, at least not as strong as I see it in Brown. Also, if the Wallace decoy argument is to be accepted, do we really want to shell out a long term contract to a decoy?

3. The Cap Situation

The Steelers cap situation is DIRE. We currently have no money to spare. I am given to understand that James Harrison and Ben Roethlisberger are going to restructure to free up some room and the Ward situation will be sorted out, but I cannot imagine there being enough room to pay for Wallace to get a Franchise Tag and still field a contending team next season. In any other season I would say Mike Wallace’s return would be a lock, but with our money being tight I could easily see us trying to use the RFA Tender and living with the consequences.

4. The Holes on this Team

Now, I do not want to lose Mike Wallace. He is a game changing talent that most assuredly makes an impact on any roster. However, the Steelers cap situation being what it is combined with the critical holes we have at other positions make a situation in which we lose Mike Wallace not as detrimental as many think. For instance, any team that decides to sign Wallace has to give us a First Round Pick. That would give us two first round picks which I think would be a first for the Steelers. Given that Max Starks, Willie Colon, and Casey Hampton all suffered critical injuries last season who knows if/when they will be available and at what level they will play at. In addition Farrior’s play dropped off a bit last year as evidenced by the fact that Ryan Clark was our leading tackler. We also have a piecemeal offensive line which at the very least will see a replacement at LG when Chris Kemo is cut. So to run down the starting positions we may have to replace on the field: LT or RT (pending where Gilbert goes), LG, NT, ILB. That’s four critical position needs that have to be addressed by a team with little available cap space. By letting Wallace garner a 1st round pick we can attempt to take care of two positions with high end draft picks (we could couple those picks and move up to get Decastro as well). Also, the cap space not used on Wallace’s long term deal could be used to bring in a few under the radar free agents, like ILB Dan Connor from Carolina, to reload this roster for a championship run.


5. Todd Haley’s Typical Wide Receiver

In Dallas, Todd Haley had the tall and physical Terrell Owens. In Arizona, he had the tall and physical Larry Fitzgerald. In Kansas City, he had the tall and physical Dwayne Bowe, who matured under Haley’s system. Haley even drafted Jonathan Baldwin, a tall physical wide receiver. Mike Wallace is not tall and comparatively not physical. If Haley has a type, Wallace certainly does not match that type. Saving some money now might allow the Steelers to bring in the prototype wide receiver Haley would want to get his offense moving. Who knows, maybe even a cheap Randy Moss could be an option for a Steelers team strapped for cash and in need of a tall wideout/replacement decoy. (I don’t think T.O. would work given his history with Haley)

In summation, losing Mike Wallace is not the end of the world that some Steeler fans will stipulate. Mike Wallace’s production dropped, he featured as the #2/decoy to team MVP Antonio Brown, we don’t have the money to franchise tag Wallace right now, the 1st round pick would help us reload this roster, and Wallace does not appear to be the best fit for Todd Haley’s offense. Now, I do not necessarily want to see Mike Wallace leave. He is a stand-up, young, dynamic receiver who demands considerable defensive attention. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Mike Wallace as a Steeler and I hope to continue to enjoy doing so. That being said, if Wallace ends up leaving, for these reasons previously stated, I will not be upset. Rather I will enjoy seeing what the Front Office has planned for an offseason that will not be forgotten as the Steelers become a team different in many ways from the team of the 2000’s.

A Look at 2012 NFL Free Agency: Wide Receiver

I have been on hiatus for a long time now. A lot of different factors went into my absence, but now I have the time and desire to return to amateur football writing. I apologize for my abnormal hiatus and I hope to update this blog more vigorously than I ever had.

With Free Agency approaching, I am struck at how many big name Free Agent Wide Receivers are going to be available. The news today of Randy Moss’ desired comeback and Terrell Owens signing with an Indoor Football Team to demonstrate his capabilities has only reinforced my considerable interest for this year’s free agency. Thankfully my unofficial holiday will not be delayed by the accursed Lockout! So, I thought as an introduction to the free agency period, I would go ahead and work through a list of the higher profile Free Agent Wide Receivers that will be available and speculate on their potential future destinations.

Vincent Jackson
2011 Team: San Diego Chargers
Potential 2012 Team: San Diego, Chicago, Jacksonville, Tampa Bay

Vincent Jackson is probably the most well rounded wide receiver in this free agency class, but he does come with baggage. His past DUI transgressions ensure that if he lapses, Jackson will endure a serious suspension. That being said, he possesses the ideal size and speed of a true #1 wide receiver. Hence, if San Diego fails to resign Jackson (Chargers GM AJ Smith said he was open to bringing Jackson back, but has made few moves to that effect) to a long term deal before free agency opens look for Wide receiver needy teams with money to burn like Chicago, Jacksonville, and Tampa Bay to get into a bidding war of Mr. Jackson’s services.

Wildcard: Washington, pending the Peyton Manning situation which would dominate Washington’s cap room, the Redskins could opt to bring in Jackson to become their future QB’s go to guy.

Wes Welker
2011 Team: New England Patriots
Potential 2012 Team: New England

It goes without saying that despite a devastating Super Bowl drop, the Pats will bring back the man who moves their offense. However, Wes Welker and Tom Brady have only connected for 10 completions over 20 yards, which although stunning makes a great deal of sense given New England’s offense. With Josh McDaniels returning look for the Pats to bring in a true deep threat to compliment Welker and open up the short game immeasurably, but Welker will most definitely be brought back.

Reggie Wayne
2011 Team: Indianapolis Colts
Potential 2012 Team: Wherever Peyton Manning goes

It is no secret that the Colts are done with Reggie Wayne. Spoiled by having Peyton Manning as his QB all of his career, Wayne did not put forth the effort that being a #1 WR demands when second and third string QBs are under center. On a brighter note, Wayne ended the season with 16 Receptions for 179 YDs and a TD in the Colts’ final two games. Wayne can still play and turned it on when it became evident he was auditioning for his 2012 team. With the wealth of WR talent in free agency Wayne will be able to sit and wait for this Peyton Manning situation to resolve itself and I am almost positive that Wayne will follow the QB who has helped him become a dominant wide receiver.

Wildcard: Houston, The Texans need a compliment to Andre Johnson and Reggie Wayne would help this offense move…not that it needs help with Foster in the backfield.

Desean Jackson
2011 Team: Philadelphia Eagles
Potential 2012 Team: Philadelphia, Cleveland, San Francisco

Desean Jackson is likely to receive Philly’s franchise tag, but given the effort, or lack thereof, he demonstrated after failing to get a long term deal, the Eagles may opt to trade the dynamic deep threat. If that happens, Cleveland with its ties to Philadelphia through Shurmur, obvious wide receiver needs, and a copious amount of picks could feasibly make a move. San Fran could also be in the mix as they also have wide receiver issues along with a glaring lack of returner depth….too soon?

Wildcard: Jacksonville, the new regime is going to try anything they can to both build up Blaine Gabbert and increase buzz about the team itself. The Jaguars are going to make a media splash move and this could very well be that move.

Dwayne Bowe
2011 Team: Kansas City Chiefs
Potential 2012 Team: Kansas City, like every other NFL team

Resigning Dwayne Bowe has to be priority #1 for the Chiefs. The one offensive bright spot on an injury beleaguered team has played like a true #1 WR and is at his peak. Bowe is a tall-deep threat, great at run blocking, who (minus one play in Pittsburgh) puts forth solid effort and entertains with mindboggling circus catches. Bowe makes any QB and any offense better. If KC lets him hit the open market, expect a mega deal from any of the WR needy teams. Seriously Kansas City, do not let Dwayne Bowe go.

Wildcard: Pittsburgh, any team would be better with Dwayne Bowe making the wildcard the team wouldn’t sign him if he hit free agency hence cap beleaguered Pittsburgh.

Marques Colston
2011 Team: New Orleans
2012 Team: New Orleans, Washington, Chicago

In any other offseason Colston going back to the Saints would be a no brainer and by all intents and purposes it should be. However, Drew Brees is also a free agent. The Saints are going to try to lockdown Brees to a long term deal before the franchise tag ability expires so that they can then use said tag on Colston. However, if no deal with Brees is done the Saints would be forced to use the tag on their All-Pro QB and Colston could field offers from other teams. Colston’s size and physicality would be ideal fits for teams like Washington and Chicago that figure to rely on the run and play action game in the upcoming season.

Wildcard: Carolina/Tampa Bay, although a pretty controversial move by Colston to go within the division both of these rivals would welcome Colston’s play to benefit their young QBs

Stevie Johnson
2011 Team: Buffalo Bills
Potential 2012 Team: Buffalo, Chicago, Jacksonville

Johnson’s touchdown celebration in week 17 was a bit uncalled for, at least in this no fun NFL of today, but Head Coach Chan Gailey’s decision to pull his best offensive weapon in a division game against New England as a sizable lead slowly dwindled was far worse. Not only did Buffalo lose in week 17, but that failure of a power move succeeded to anger the Buffalo fan base and raise Johnson’s “Home Town Discount.” If I were Johnson, I would add a million to my price just for that maneuver. If Buffalo succeeds at failing by letting Johnson (their first wide receiver to have back to back seasons with 1,000 yards receiving) walk look for the Bears and Jaguars to pounce.

Wildcard: New England/Jets, The Patriots/Jets love picking off disgruntled division rival talent, just ask Miami (Wes Welker/Jason Taylor).

Brandon Llyod
2011 Team: Denver/St. Louis
2012 Team: New England, St. Louis

Lloyd has expressed his willingness to follow McDaniels, the coach who has now brought Lloyd out of two slumps into relevance as a low end #1 wide receiver. I fully expect Lloyd to take a discount to remain statistically impactful and the opportunity to get near a Super Bowl bid.

Wildcard: St. Louis, It seems odd to count the team he played for a wildcard, but Jeff Fisher, while in Tennessee, had a long history of hating the wide receiver position. The only aggressive move wide receiver wise the Titans ever made was signing David Givens from New England (A friend of mine is slapping his forehead in exasperation). Nonetheless, Lloyd has expressed willingness to work with Fisher and this could actually happen.

Mike Wallace
2011 Team: Pittsburgh Steelers
Potential 2012 Team: Pittsburgh

The Steelers are up and over the cap wall, but have been trying to free up money, presumably to sign the deep threat Wallace to a long term deal. Much like Welker and Bowe, the most likely scenario is Wallace returning to the Black and Gold.

Wildcard: Baltimore/New England/Cincinnati, Say the Steelers are confident in Antonio Brown and apply the Restricted Free Agency Tender to Wallace to get a 1st round pick from some team. The Steelers then could use their cap to get one of these wideouts in free agency that matches Haley's system more than Mike Wallace and address a few other key positions. I'll write more on that later.

Randy Moss

Mario Manningham
2011 Team: New York Giants
2012 Team: New York Giants, Jets, San Fran, Tampa Bay

Manningham’s clutch catch in the Super Bowl will warrant him some fashion of pay raise, but given Nicks/Cruz I do not think that raise will come with the Giants. The prospects for Manningham’s return seem even scanter with the possibility of bringing Steve Smith back into the fold. The Jets stand out as a team with wide receiver needs that could do with an under the radar signing like Manningham. San Fran is also in the market for some deep threat wide receiver talent. Tampa Bay figures to be an aggressive player this year so look for them to take a look into Manningham as well.

Wildcard: St. Louis, Fisher does not make many wide receiver moves, but signing a team’s third wide receiver runs in step with his SOP.

Laurent Robinson
2011 Team: Dallas Cowboys
2012 Team: Dallas, San Diego, St. Louis

Dallas may be hard pressed to bring back their breakout third wide receiver as they have Austin/Bryant on roster. His rapport with Tony Romo was solid though (to the chagrin of my fantasy season) so bringing Robinson into the fold is a possibility. That being said, there were some in San Diego who did not like releasing Robinson in September 2011 and, if Vincent Jackson walks, the Chargers could be a team open to the idea of plucking this talented WR. St. Louis could be an interested player as well because in addition to my Jeff Fisher 3rd WR Theory, Robinson had played well for the Rams before injuries took their toll.

Wildcard: Tennessee, Kenny Britt is recovering nicely, but adding someone like Robinson would give hopeful starting QB Jake Locker a nice set of targets in Britt, Robinson, Washington and Hawkins.

Braylon Edwards
2011 Team: San Francisco
Potential 2012 Team: New York Jets

Edwards bombed out in San Fran due to injuries, but he was only there because the Jets overestimated his market. With Edwards market value at an all-time low, look for the Jets to pull the trigger (sorry Plax) and replace Burress with the man he replaced.

Wildcard: Tough to place a market for a guy who got waived by WR needy 49ers and traded away by the always desperate Browns. However, I could see some team taking a shot at Edwards. If Edwards wants a bunch of Steelers jerseys with his name on them and discount cards to local eateries (not a reflection on the value of his talent, but rather how little money we have) I would certainly welcome Edwards onto the Black & Gold. Maybe even a desperate Cleveland could give him a try…I wonder if some Cleveland fans haven’t burned his jersey…

Plaxico Burress
2011 Team: New York Jets
Potential 2012 Team: Philadelphia Eagles

Burress rebounded fairly nicely from his court ordered hiatus, posting 8 touchdowns and over 600 yards with a semi-competent QB in Mark Sanchez. From what I have heard, Burress wants to go to Philly and the feeling is mutual after the Eagles experienced difficulties in their red zone offense, a problem the 6 foot 5 wideout would resolve fairly quickly.

Wildcard: Pittsburgh, we have NO MONEY. We may be letting Hines Ward go to get money to sign Mike Wallace. That being said if the money is right…. i.e. very little, then the Steelers would certainly be open to brining Plaxico back home, especially since Todd Haley’s new offense is “short” of the tall wide receivers he is used to working with.

Pierre Garcon
2011 Team: Indianapolis Colts
Potential 2012 Team: Indianapolis

Despite Indy’s seeming preference to blow the franchise up and return to 1998 with Luck, I think they will resign Garcon. He put in the effort that should have been Wayne’s to put in and will not break the bank. Look for Garcon to stay right where he is.

Wildcard: Buffalo, potential replacement for Stevie Johnson and a last name sure to win over some of that desirable French Canadian market.

Robert Meachem
2011 Team: New Orleans Saints
Potential 2012 Team: New Orleans, Tampa Bay, San Fran

Meachem could likely be headed elsewhere especially if the Saints do resign Colston. If Meachem does hit free agency, Tampa Bay and San Fran could certainly make use of the somewhat underutilized Meachem.

Wildcard: Carolina, Meachem could be the cheap way to stick it to the Saints and give Newton a reliable target.

Deion Branch
2011 Team: New England Patriots
Potential 2012 Team: New England

Branch is getting up there, but Tom Brady likes having him around. If Branch is willing to take a sizable hometown discount I could see him staying on board, especially considering they will likely unload Chad Ochocinco soon enough.

Wildcard: Retirement, it would seem a bit early for Branch, but given the wealth of wide receiver talent available it is tough to find a market for the veteran outside of New England.

Second Draft of My Mock Draft

1. Carolina Panthers: Cam Newton QB Auburn
I have already said I don’t like this and think the Panthers should grab Peterson and be a little closer to stopping Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, and Josh Freeman. That being said, I believe the comparisons made between Russell and Newton are unfair. The major concern I have with Newton is the system he played for, I have no doubt about his raw ability. Newton’s upside is incredible and Carolina could do a lot worse at QB. With a solid oline and rush attack Carolina could be bring him along and have a decent year.
2. Denver Broncos: Marcell Dareus DT Alabama
The only doubt I have about this pick is that John Fox spent years at Carolina and never drafted a defensive tackle. That being said, I don’t remember there having been a nearly as talented DT as Dareus. Denver should draft him and considerably ease their transition back to the 4-3.
3. Buffalo Bills: Von Miller OLB Texas A&M
Barring Cam newton sliding, Miller appears to be going to Buffalo. Miller will solidify a front seven that is shaky at best. Miller was a stud in college and from what I heard about the senior bowl and combine, he has only reaffirmed this notion. If the Bills can get Miller and revive Shawne Merriman they could have a formidable pass rush…hopefully one that could put Tom Brady into the turf a few times.
4. Cincinnati Bengals: AJ Green WR UGA
Previous Pick: Blaine Gabbert QB Missouri
Well, from everything that has been discussed this week AJ Green appears to be the Bengals man. For some reason the Bengals seem convinced that Palmer will come back. Why…I don’t know but they seem convinced or at least entrenched to not trading him. If the Bengals draft Green it frees them up to move Chad Ochocinco, which if a CBA was agreed upon before the draft would make an interesting trade storyline. Imagine trading Ocho and a combo the Bengals could move back into the first and nab a QB. Who knows. For the moment the Bengals take Green and give themselves a dynamic talent for whoever plays QB.
5. Arizona Cardinals: Robert Quinn OLB UNC
This is the first road bump in the mock draft. The Cardinals have a lot of holes one of which is QB. Blaine Gabbert is available, but I think Gabbert is going to fall much like Rodgers, Clausen, and Quinn. It is strangely quiet right now as far as Gabbert goes. Everybody just assumes he’ll be a top ten QB but nobody is saying he is THIS TEAMS GUY!!! A s far as why the cards pass on Gabbert QB is a problem for the Cards, but the truth is that Warner managed to paper over a lot of holes the Cards had. A rookie QB will not accomplish the same thing. Thus, the Cards need to address other pressing matters. Enter Quinn a dynamic pass rusher who under the tutelage of Joey Porter and Clark Haggans could become a terror of the NFC West.
6. Cleveland Browns: Julio Jones WR Alabama
Previous Pick: AJ Green WR UGA
This is a puzzling pick as well. Patrick Peterson is on the board and pairing him with Haden could be tempting. Tyron Smith could fill a void the Browns have on the right side of their offensive line. However I have the Browns taking Julio Jones. Last mock I said two wideouts will not go top ten and if AJ Green is not picked by the Bengals I believe that will hold true. However, the Browns are so desperate at wideout that they should draft Jones and give Mccoy a dynamic target and Hillis a powerful run blocker.
7. San Francisco 49ers: Patrick Peterson CB LSU
Why won’t the 49ers draft Gabbert? I don’t think Harbaugh feels any pressure to draft a QB. In all honesty he seems content to use Frank Gore and the defense to get by in a lackluster division. Plus, it is one thing to talk about the possibility of bringing Alex Smith back, it is another thing to mention him as much as Harbaugh had. I think Harbaugh will give it a go at reviving Alex Smith’s career. Quite frankly, I think Smith has A LOT of talent, but it is not consistent…Moving on to the actual pick why not pick the drafts best player and solidify your secondary…its almost too easy.
8. Tennessee Titans: Blaine Gabbert QB Missouri
Previous Pick: Nick Fairley DT Auburn
This is tough. Fairley is linked to the Titans in about every mock under the sun. However, if Gabbert passes by the Titans it will be a shocker. It is said Gabbert has great accuracy on short to medium range throws. Sounds a lot like Kerry Collins doesn’t it? Gabber could step in and dominate right away.
9. Dallas Cowboys: Tyron Smith OT USC
There are a lot of rumors surrounding Dallas on draft day. They could trade up or down if they wanted to. The Cowboys imploded last year under puppet leader Wade Phillips. With the rejuvenation experienced under Jason Garrett I think the Cowboys should have no problem getting back into playoff contention. To that end, without Tony Romo I see no way the Cowboys return. He needs to be protected and drafting Smith may help fix the hole left by Flozell’s departure…again THANK YOU DALLAS!
10. Washington Redskins: Jake Locker QB Washington
I am a proponent of the if you need a QB GO BIG OR GO HOME school of quarterback drafting. If Locker is the prototypical Shanahan passer then Draft him with the 10th overall. From what I have seen Locker’s mobility and heart make him a perfect fit for a Shanahan-Elway revival. Washington could do a lot worse than drafting Locker, especially if Quinn is not available. This could also happen if the Skins trade down. Either way I think it would be a mistake to pass on a QB of Locker’s skill after all he was rated as being better than Sam Bradford a year ago. If he can reclaim that ability 10th overall would be a steal.
11. Houston Texans: Aldon Smith OLB Missouri
I think the Texans should draft Prince with this pick…but as I understand it, Aldon Smith is higher on their draft board. The pick makes sense given the new 3-4 the Texans will implement and their need for a pass-rusher. Smith compares favorably with Demarcus Ware and if they are anywhere near accurate the Texans would be crazy to not draft Smith.
12. Minnesota Vikings: Nick Fairley DT Auburn
Previous Pick: D’Quan Bowers DE Clemson
With the starcaps fiasco the Vikes could be without the Williams wall. Pat Williams is probably on the way out so drafting a replacement for him probably needs to be done sooner than later. Fairley was once considered a lock to go first overall, but a few issues have lowered his stock. It is no matter, the freak monster should definitely excel in the Minnesota line that prides itself on being the defenses backbone. Fairley could fill a short term need and a long term need thus making it very unlikely he will fall beyond the Vikes.
13. Detroit Lions: Prince Amukamura CB Nebraska
The artist formerly known as Prince is finally off the board. Talent of his caliber is too good to pass up at this stage. I would invest in a tackle to protect your investment in Stafford, but hey…that’s what trading back into the first is about right? For now they draft Prince in an effort to stop Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler.
14. St. Louis Rams: Corey Liguet DT Illinois
Previous Pick: Julio Jones WR Alabama
The Rams made the right choice picking Sam Bradford last year. They would like to give him a dynamic target but Cleveland had no intentions of allowing that to happen. It doesn’t matter. Mcdaniels can make any wide receiver look great. Randy Moss, Brandon Marshall, and Brandon Llyod all dominated in their year with Mcdaniels. I trust that he can make Clayton or a free agent asset dominate. To that end I hear Liguet is high on Spags draft board. In lieu of a wide receiver the Rams sup up their defensive line.
15. Miami Dolphins: Mike Pouncey G Florida
Previous Pick: Ryan Mallett QB Miami
I see Pouncey linked to the Dolphins and with good reason. Although a reach at 15, they have issues on the interior offensive line. I like Mallet. He is my third favorite QB in this class behind Locker and Kaepernick. However a coach on the hot seat should never tie their fate to a rookie QB. Sign a free agent merc and save yourself the trouble of rookie growing pains. Pouncey is a safe pick that will not get you fired.
16. Jacksonville Jaguars: Ryan Kerrigan DE Purdue
The Jags strength used to be their defensive line. Drafting Alualu, although a reach, certainly paid off. The Jags are a dynamic defensive end away from having a formidable line again. To that end, Kerrigan and his constant motor would be a welcome addition to the Jaguars.
17. New England Patriots: JJ Watt DE Wisconsin
Previous Pick: Cameron Jordan DE Cal
I am putting JJ Watt to the Pats mainly because I feel the Patriots have a lot of room to move in the draft. JJ Watt has floating value that is sometimes as high as ninth overall or even lower than this pick. Subsequently I see JJ Watt’s coming to New England in many different scenarios. In another way I think the Pats make the move to dispel a rumor they don’t deal with a particular agent. It is tough to be completely indiscernible if something like that is floating around.
18. San Diego Chargers: Cameron Jordan DE Cal
Previous Pick: JJ Watt DE Wisconsin
Cameron Jordan in many circles is thought to be the best 3-4 DE in the draft. The Chargers are in desperate need to establish talent along their defensive line. Drafting Jordan should go a long way towards reinforcing San Diego’s ability to pass-rush and stop the run.
19. New York Giants: Anthony Castonzo OT Boston College
The Giants turned to band-aid Shawn Andrews to fix their issues along the offensive line, but the time of bandaids is over. The Giants need to draft their left tackle of the future and Castonzo grades out favorably in this capacity. As the best offensive lineman available I think he is atop the Giants board at this point.
20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: D’Quan Bowers DE Clemson
Previous Pick: Justin Houston DE UGA
Tampa Bay has absolutely no problem taking a risk on a player as dynamic as Bowers. At one time a potential #1 overall pick, Tampa Bay could land the steal of the draft and give themselves a defensive line capable of putting Drew Brees and Matt Ryan to the ground.
21. Kansas City Chiefs: Gabe Carimi OT Wisconsin
Previous Pick: Phil Taylor NT Baylor
Apparently the medical report on Phil Taylor’s foot has been denied. Even still it will cause teams to hesitate. Taylor’s value was inflated to begin with being the lone nose tackle with a first round grade. From what I saw in their playoff game the Chiefs had no problem putting Flacco to the ground, they had a problem keeping pressure off of Matt Cassel and he turned it over like room service. The Chiefs could draft Carimi and shore up their line…a wide receiver besides Dwayne Bowe would be good, but there is not one with solid value here.
22. Indianapolis Colts: Nate Solder OT Colorado
Solder is not the best tackle available, but he has great upside. I have been burned by giving the Colts the best available at the position so now I am giving them Solder. Solder will fit right in with Indy’s most pressing need, keeping Peyton manning upright. It’s tough for him to put the Colts on his back when he is on the turf.
23. Philadelphia Eagles: Jimmy Smith CB Colorado
Previous Pick: Gabe Carimi OT Wisconsin
I have difficulty making this pick. The Eagles definitely need a corner, but a rookie? I think Derek Sherrod is more along their speed, but the Eagles appear to be happy waiting until the second round to address the right side of their line, especially if they can land Nova prospect Ijilana. For now I have them drafting the talented Smith.
24. New Orleans Saints: Cameron Heyward DE Ohio State
Previous Pick: Akeem Ayers OLB UCLA
I hear that Cameron Heyward is high on the Saints draft board. A defensive end was a serious need for the Saints last year. Adding a workhorse like Heyward would help the Saints continue Gregg Williams’ tradition of smashing QB’s into the turf. He also is a phenomenal run-stopper who could fill in the void the Saints have at linebacker.
25. Seattle Seahawks: Ryan Mallett QB Arkansas
Previous Pick: Jimmy Smith CB Colorado
Ryan Mallett is going to be a successful QB in the NFL. After watching him on numerous occasions at Arkansas I know he can make every throw an NFL QB needs to. His character concerns have caused him to drop, but I do not see falling past the Seahawks. Pete Carroll does not have problems with character issues and will jump all over having a rocket arm QB who can air it out to Seattle’s surprisingly promising wide receiver corp.
26. Baltimore Ravens: Muhammed Wilkerson DE/DT Temple
All I hear from the Ravens is how much they want a 3-4 DE. Wilkerson is the best available so I have him here for the moment. However, if Wilkerson is gone…I heard Cameron Heyward is high on their radar
27. Atlanta Falcons: Justin Houston DE/OLB UGA
The Falcons can thank D’Quan Bowers’ knee for this one. I feel Houston is going to be a beast of a pass rusher, an area the Falcons need to upgrade. If the Falcons draft Houston they can finally fix Bobby Petrino’s mistake of drafting Jamal Anderson.
28. Oakland Raiders: Colin Kaepernick QB Nevada
Previous Pick: New England Mike Pouncey G Florida
Kaepernick is coming to New York which means some team tipped their hand to the NFL and wants the kid there. The only rumor mill info I have is that an AFC West team was enamoured with Kaepernick and had him rated as their number one QB. Looking at that division, Philip Rivers, Matt Cassell, and Orton/Tebow are presumably safe…at least from drafting a first round QB. The Raiders however, despite going undefeated in the division did not place in the playoffs. The lackluster Jason Campbell may be a favorite of Al Davis, but we all know Davis loves speed and strong armed QB’s. Al Davis could easily trade into the first with New England an irony considering New England has Oakland’s first round from the Richard Seymour trade.
29. Chicago Bears: Derek Sherrod OT Miss State
The Bears GM recently stated that he graded Derek Sherrod as a second round talent. I smell smokecreen. Subsequently I cannot see the Bears passing on a quality tackle given all of the offensive line issues they have had. That being said they have also been heavily linked to North Carolina DT marvin Austin. For the moment I feel tackle is more important for the bears.
30. New York Jets: Phil Taylor NT Baylor
Previous Pick: Stephen Pea DE Oregon State
Phil Taylor’s foot issue will probably scare off the Chiefs. If the Chiefs do not draft him I think the Jets will take a chance. Kris Jenkins constantly gets injured and leaves a void up front. The Jets could look to Akeem Ayers, but I think their defensive line is a more pressing matter.
31. Pittsburgh Steelers: Ras-I Dowling CB Virginia
This is a tough pick. If Phil Taylor falls we may look to draft him, but I do not know how enthused I would be with that. Nosetackles only play for two downs. Hence Casey Hampton, still playing at a pro bowl caliber, still has a good three years left. I do not think that drafting a replacement is a priority at this stage. If the Bears are not smokescreening and Derek Sherrod falls, he may be an intriguing prospect, but the Steelers have invited a lot of second and third round offensive lineman. I think they will wait and try to draft mammoth Alabama tackle James Carpenter.
I believe the Steelers will look to address their secondary early in the draft. They may trade this pick down to let one of the QB needy teams trade up, but if they stay home I say they go corner. Most people have them taking Aaron Williams, but from what I have heard the Steelers have had enough Texas players for the moment after Tony Hills and Limas Sweed. So the alternative is Ras-I Dowling.
The big problem with him is his injury. Before his Senior Season he was considered a lock for the first round and with good reason. The guys a beast in coverage and can hit like a Mack truck. I also hear he is a strong character guy, one coach going as far as saying he is the type of guy you would be proud to call your son and the guy you dream your daughter brings home.

The Steelers take to guys like this like a moth to flame. I would have no problem with him at 31.
32. Green Bay Packers: Brooks Reed OLB Arizona
The Pack have very few weaknesses. The only hole I can find on the team is no dynamic pass rusher opposite Matthews. The few games the Pack lost were games where Matthews was hurt. As I understand it Brooks Reed is rising on boards and so for the moment I have the Pack taking him in an effort to make a strong pass rush even stronger.

First Draft of My Mock Draft

1. Carolina Panthers: Cam Newton QB Auburn
Let me say that first off, I disagree with this pick. Carolina should draft Dareus or Peterson and call it a day. That being said, everybody under the sun is going Cam Newton so I’ll jump on the bandwagon. I think this pick will set the franchise back, but to each their own. Good luck Carolina!
2. Denver Broncos: Marcell Dareus DT Alabama
This appears to be a no brainer. Denver needs to establish their defensive line and Dareus is the best Dline prospect in this draft. I could see Von Miller at this pick, but I think Denver will rest on Ayers and Dumervil as their defensive ends. One note however, John Fox went YEARS at Carolina with mediocre defensive tackles so I would not be surprised to see them pass on Dareus here.
3. Buffalo Bills: Von Miller OLB Texas A&M
Many have Buffalo drafting a QB here, which would certainly make sense, but from what I have heard, Buddy Nix does not like Gabbert. That being said Buffalo could really use help on their defense. Miller appears to be a phenomenal outside linebacker that could help mend Buffalo’s bust Aaron Maybin…not to mention slam Tom Brady into the turf once or twice.
4. Cincinnati Bengals: Blaine Gabbert QB Missouri
For all of Brown’s talk I cannot see him wasting Carson Palmer. I think the Bengals need to trade Palmer, but because of the CBA…ugh…they really need to prepare for life after Palmer. If Gabbert falls the Bengals should make the pick. Many mocks have them drafting a wide receiver and pick a Qb in the second. However as I understand Ochocinco is not going anywhere and Caldwell is looking like a true number one wideout so why not solidify the quarterback position. The last thing Cincy should want is to wait and settle for someone lackluster. It should be Cincy’s number one goal to NOT have a worse QB situation than Cleveland.
5. Arizona Cardinals: Robert Quinn OLB UNC
This is a tough one because Arizona could go one of two ways. They could draft Patrick Peterson, arguably the best player in this draft. It would certainly make sense to do so as the Cardinals need someone opposite of DRC. However for the moment I have them drafting Robert Quinn to upgrade over veterans Joey Porter and Clark Haggans which I feel is more of a priority for the Cardinals (Both awesome players once upon a time). Quinn is sailing up draft boards after UNC’s Pro day and may be a more solid pick for Arizona, who really just needs to put the lackluster QBs in the NFC West(Bradford aside) on the ground.
6. Cleveland Browns: AJ Green WR UGA
Reunite AJ Green with Massoquoi! If Green is available the Browns would be crazy to pass him up. To that same token there is a contingent that believes the Browns should draft to fill their team with 4-3 personnel, but in all honesty…the Browns did not have good 3-4 personnel so the transition to a 4-3 may not be so painful as everybody claims it will be. Draft Green and give McCoy/Hillis a fighting chance.
7. San Francisco 49ers: Patrick Peterson CB LSU
What a dream! Patrick Peterson had better be on the top of San Fran’s draft board. Besides the aging Nate Clements they have next to nothing at corner. Patrick Peterson would be a solid addition to a pretty promising, young defensive unit.
8. Tennessee Titans: Nick Fairley DT Auburn
The Titans need a replacement for Albert Haynesworth and Fairley projects to be just that. The Titans do not need an elite QB to win this division, they need a rock solid defense and Fairley could help them achieve just that…of course so could Albert Haynesworth…post CBA that is.
9. Dallas Cowboys: Tyron Smith OT USC
Dallas may not make this pick. I hear rumors that they will trade up, trade down. God knows they will probably throw a wrench in my mock draft. For the moment, assuming they stay here I have them drafting Smith. Smith is drawing a lot of comparisons to D’Brickshaw Ferguson and if those comparisons are accurate…the Cowboys should not hesitate to pull the trigger. One year without Flozell Adams (Thank you Cowboys by the way, I enjoyed having the Hotel shore up the right side of our oline) their franchise QB is out for the year…oline should be a priority over Prince and other potential prospects.
10. Washington Redskins: Jake Locker QB Washington
This is another tricky pick. If I was smart, I’d just pick Julio Jones and call it a day. However, the Skins, having nearly zero picks need to try and trade down. With Prince Akumakura, JJ Watt, Corey Liguet, and Julio Jones available, the Skins should be able to find a suitor. If they do, then their lower pick can safely be used on Jake Locker who I think will be a damn fine QB.
11. Houston Texans: Aldon Smith DE/OLB Misouri
I think the Texans should draft Prince with this pick…but as I understand it, Aldon Smith is higher on their draft board. The pick makes sense given the new 3-4 the Texans will implement and their need for a pass-rusher. Smith compares favorably with Demarcus Ware so I definitely feel that Smith is a strong possibility.
12. Minnesota Vikings: D’quan Bowers DE Clemson
Oh how the mighty have fallen. It’s hard to believe Bowers has come this far down the draft. Some think he may fall even farther. If his knee problems turn out to be serious, I definitely see him taking a tumble. For now, I have the Vikes drafting the dynamic end to give tackles headaches…who do you stop Jared Allen or Bowers?
13. Detroit Lions: Prince Amukamara CB Nebraska
The artist formerly known as Prince is finally off the board. Talent of his caliber is too good to pass up at this stage. I would invest in a tackle to protect your investment in Stafford, but hey…that’s what trading back into the first is about right? For now they draft Prince in an effort to stop Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler.
14. St. Louis Rams: Julio Jones WR Alabama
Many don’t see this happening and there is a strong possibility it will not. However, from what I have seen over the past few years, wide receivers fall on draft day. Either AJ or Julio gets drafted in the Top Ten this year, not both. Sure Crabtree and Heyward-bey were drafted top ten, but Al Davis should not be used as an example of sane drafting….thankfully he does not have a pick in the first round this year.
15. Miami Dolphins: Ryan Mallett QB Arkansas
This pick may not occur. I do not like the idea of a rookie QB being drafted by a coach in the hot seat. I have not seen that combo work yet. Fox drafted Clausen…oops…Dennis Green drafted Leinert….Kiffin drafted Russell…the combo is usually never good, especially for the QB. However, Miami needs to find a QB who can throw touchdowns. Also with no second round pick from the Brandon Marshall trade, Miami may opt to trade down as well. Who would want to trade up to this spot is anybody’s guess though.
16. Jacksonville Jaguars: Ryan Kerrigan DE Purdue
The Jags strength used to be their defensive line. Drafting Alualu, although a reach, certainly paid off. The Jags are a dynamic defensive end away from having a formidable line again. To that end, Kerrigan and his constant motor would be a welcome addition to the Jaguars.
17. New England Patriots: Cameron Jordan DE/OLB Cal
I almost want to strategically mock the Pats taking someone nowhere near Round One because in all honesty I do not think I have picked the Pats correctly ever. IF they even make this pick I see them targeting Cameron Jordan to try and get a pass-rush generated.
18. San Diego Chargers: JJ Watt DE Wisconsin
Will JJ Watt tumble this far…possibly. If he does the Chargers need to run up to the podium and make their selection. San Diego is dying at 3-4DE and need to shoot some life into the front seven. Perhaps drafting Watt would send a jolt into Larry English and give San Diego a reinforced Pass rush.
19. New York Giants: Anthony Castonzo OT New York Giants
Shawn Andrews was a nice stopgap, but from all appearances the Giants will part ways with him. To that note, they will need a new tackle. The best available is Anthony Castonzo who can allow Diehl to swing to left guard and maybe keep Eli Manning upright…or importantly rip holes open for Bradshaw/Jacobs.
20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Justin Houston DE UGA
The Bucs made a major investment in their defensive line last season, shoring up their interior. Now they need to setup a pass rush to complement their elite tackles. Houston was a demon at UGA and could definitely help Tampa Bay continue its upward trend.
21. Kansas City Chiefs: Phil Taylor NT Baylor
Kansas City will either draft an OLB to compliment Tamba Hali or a NT. Phil Taylor is jumping up boards so much like the Pack reached for BJ Raji, I think the Chiefs will reach for Taylor and give Dorsey/Jackson some help.
22. Indianapolis Colts: Nate Solder OT Colorado
The Colts need to keep Peyton Manning upright and maybe open running lanes…mostly they need to keep Peyton upright. Solder grades out as a near elite pass blocker and as such will fit right in with the Colts style.
23. Philadelphia Eagles: Gabe Carimi OT Wisconsin
This pick depends on how King Dunlap’s injury is progressing. As I understand the coaching staff likes Dunlap at RT, but I could hardly blame the Eagles for wanting to bring a little youthful competition in town. Many have them drafting Jimmy Smith, but I don’t think Philly views a rookie CB as their ticket to a Super Bowl, a free agent merc like Asomugha or Leon Hall could easily do that. Their ticket to a Super Bowl is to keep Michael Vick standing up…at least for a little longer.
24. New Orleans Saints: Akeem Ayers OLB UCLA
FOR YET ANOTHER YEAR THE SAINTS ARE STARVING AT LINEBACKER!!!! They just do not put a premium on the position. For now I have them drafting Ayers, whose aggressiveness fits right in with the Saints defense. They’ll probably draft a defensive end though just to make me mad.
25. Seattle Seahawks: Jimmy Smith CB Colorado
Seattle has SO MANY holes that it is tough to tell what they will draft. They could draft Pouncey or Ponder or Wilkerson or Liguet or Sherrod….the list goes on forever. For now I see their pressing need at corner especially if Marcus Trufant leaves. Jimmy Smith is elite talent who has fallen due to character issues. Pete Carroll could care less about character issues. If he did Marshawn Lynch would have never gone beast mode all over the Saints. He’ll be happy to draft Jimmy Smith and be one step closer to repairing Seattle’s torn secondary.
26. Baltimore Ravens: Muhammad Wilkerson DT/DE Temple
All I hear from the Ravens is how much they want a 3-4 DE. Wilkerson is the best available so I have him here for the moment. However, if Wilkerson is gone…I heard Cameron Heyward is high on their radar.
27. Atlanta Falcons: Adrian Clayborn DE Iowa
This pick is a freaking steal for Atlanta. Clayborn’s medical issues are dropping him in this draft. Atlanta needs to get a book end opposite John Abraham and Clayborn can be that bookend. A previous top ten talent could easily fall right into Atlanta’s lap with this pick.
28. New England Patriots: Mike Pouncey G Florida
Ugh…the Pats need to shore up the interior of their offensive line and Pouncey could easily do that. Will they have this pick…probably not.
29. Chicago Bears: Derek Sherrod OT Miss State
If Pouncey is available I think the Bears jump all over him. That being said…the bears could do a lot worse than Sherrod. Their oline needs first round attention and the tackle out of Mississippi could do just the trick.
30. New York Jets: Stephen Pea DE Oregon State
The Jets go with flash over substance in some cases and I think this will be one of them. Liguet is still on the board, but I think the Jets go for Pea whose bench press was unbelievable. The Jets could hardly pass up an opportunity to draft a man who could possibly move Rex Ryan an inch.
31. Pittsburgh Steelers: Ras I-Dowling CB Virginia
I could easily see this not happening. Not because I have had the Steelers draft a corner in three of my mock drafts to no avail. Not because I think there is a player higher on their board. Not because I am a cynic. It is mainly because here is where the run on Quarterbacks takes place. One of the QB needy teams will make the Steelers an offer and I see us trading down. I would not be unhappy with that scenario.
If the Steelers make the pick…then I have a sneaking suspicion Dowling may be their man. Taylor and Gay both have contracts up. Although I see Gay leaving I think the Steelers will do right by Ike and give him a deal. Mcfadden’s deal runs up after next season. Corner is a fairly pressing need, but we could make do without one this early. However, the Steelers are always planning and I think Dowling fits right into their plans.
The big problem with him is his injury. Before his Senior Season he was considered a lock for the first round and with good reason. The guys a beast in coverage and can hit like a Mack truck. I also hear he is a strong character guy, one coach going as far as saying he is the type of guy you would be proud to call your son and the guy you dream your daughter brings home.

The Steelers take to guys like this like a moth to flame. I would have no problem with him at 31.
32. Green Bay Packers: Brooks Reed DE/OLB Arizona
The Pack have very few weaknesses. The only hole I can find on the team is no dynamic pass rusher opposite Matthews. The few games the Pack lost were games where Matthews was hurt. As I understand it Brooks Reed is rising on boards and so for the moment I have the Pack taking him in an effort to make a strong pass rush even stronger.

Why Terrell Owens Should Be A Steeler

Well it’s July and once again one of football’s best players is still not on a team. When will Brett Favre rejoin the Vikings? Man, every summer with this guy!
Sorry for the levity, but in all honesty I find it amazing that T.O. is still a free agent this late in the game. I can certainly understand why that is the case though. T.O. was cocky and clashed with coaches in San Francisco. He was cocky and clashed with coaches in Philadelphia. He was cocky and clashed with coaches in Dallas. TO has a long history of blowing up in his coaches faces and the team suffering the consequences, but in all honesty was TO the downfall of these teams?

TO was in San Fran at the tail end of the 49ers dynasty. As it became unraveled it was easy to blame the flamboyant hot shot wideout. In Philadelphia, TO made comments that he should not have, but as opposed to addressing those comments and dealing with the matter in house, Andy Reid and the Eagles decided to deactivate TO for 11 games! It is interesting to note that in those seven games TO had a season remarkably like his season in Buffalo, stats wise at least. Why discard a player dominating so much for an entire season over a few comments? The Eagles went into a talespin and lost their best chance at a Super Bowl. In Dallas, Romo couldn’t get it done in December. TO had shouting matches with coaches in Dallas, but in all honesty with as much talent as Dallas has, how have they not won a championship? My guess would be that Jerry Jones’ puppet coaching crew is to blame and anyone with any knowledge of football would be able to see that the Dallas coaching staff leaves a lot to be desired. Notice, TO didn’t blow up in Bill Parcell’s face…but what do I know? I’m an amateur writer about to try and sell Terrell Owens to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The jist of what I am getting at is that while TO has never been a “good soldier” he is not necessarily the destroyer of teams that he is made out to be.

Ok so another mark against TO is that he gives up on plays when he doesn’t get his way. Valid point. TO is a world class whiner when it comes to getting him the ball. Dallas vs Pittsburgh he gave up on a route and ended up causing an INT that gave Pittsburgh the winning touchdown. That is a terrible mark against TO. He will occasionally give up when frustrated and not put the effort in. However, in that game TO had Dallas’ only touchdown, plus it was a fairly acrobatic grab with Ike Taylor all over him. TO has behaved petulantly, but in a season at Buffalo, I saw no petulance or whining despite numerous losses and a sharp decline in stats. TO went through football limbo and finally found out what it was like to be on a bad team. On a good team, TO would be grateful enough to give 100%...not to mention that father time in waiting to take TO’s skill. This year is almost now or never.

Well, TO drops a lot of passes. True. TO does drop a lot of passes. If he caught all of the passes he has dropped he may have passed Jerry Rice in receiving stats. Regardless of the drops TO is still in the top ten in most receiving categories. He may drop the ball occasionally, but he more than makes up for that in big play catches. So, it comes down to do the plays still outweigh the drops, drama, effort, and risk? Let’s take a look at what TO can do.

The problem in laying out what TO brings to the table is that what he has done after the whistle tends to shroud all of it out. I think to prove T.O.’s value to the Steelers, I have to explain TO’s skill set in terms of what the Steelers organization and fans expected out of Limas Sweed. For the uninitiated, Limas Sweed is a wide receiver from Texas that we drafted in the second round two years ago. He was supposed to be good, but in similar fashion to TO, Sweed had a problem making catches. The difference between the two is that TO can put drops behind him and make big time catches. Sweed was a tall guy as is TO. The difference is that TO is a workout warrior who is solid muscle. It is nearly impossible to prevent him from catching a ball in the endzone. Many have tried and many have failed. Sweed demonstrated a propensity for the crack block, which TO could easily duplicate and exceed. Can you imagine a team with TO and Ward run blocking? Mendenhall loves bumping runs to the outside and having TO and Ward clearing the edge would make for some nice rushing gains. Sweed had the ability to get open at will, TO most definitely possesses that ability. Even at 36 TO still got behind defenses all the time in Buffalo, but the weak armed Trent Edwards and Fitzpatrick could never give a satisfactory deep ball, just ask Lee Evans. To still has incredible speed and is in great shape for his age. He can still burn defenses and turn a five yard out into much larger gains. In a terrible Buffalo offense he averaged 15.1 yards per reception! TO can still play at a high level. To sum up, TO can do everything Sweed can do better and would make a perfect one year bandaid for the injured wide receiver.

I have made this argument before and the question always comes up, why do you want to ruin your team? Why? Well I do not see signing TO as a step towards ruining my team in all honesty. TO is viewed as a destroyer of teams, but we have seen that while TO handled things badly, ownership often handled things worse. The Steelers ownership would have no problem dealing with TO issues. They traded Holmes for a 5th and have a history of unloading troublemakers (with the notable exception of Ben). If TO acts up I have no doubt he will be shown the door. Also, the last time TO was coupled with a strong veteran wideout was in San Fran when Jerry Rice was playing. With long established Pittsburgh star Hines Ward opposite TO, I think there would be a competitive edge established among the two. Also, TO would have to share the spotlight with a wide receiver adored by his team and who has done something TO never did, won two Super Bowl rings. As I mention the rings, most of the people on this roster have Super Bowl rings, many of them have two. In the receiving corps alone Hines has two, Randle El has one, and Heath has two. On a team with champions who know what it takes to get to the big show, TO would be a good soldier and help get his teammates another ring as hard as he can.

The main reason I want TO on this football team is that this is a championship caliber football team. We brought back three Pittsburgh Super Bowl champs in Randle El, Larry Foote, and Bryant McFadden. Polamalu’s health will only become more of a question as he gets older and Casey Hampton, Aaron Smith, and James Farrior are not getting any younger. With Ben at QB we finally have an offense capable of carrying our defense, which it did against Green Bay and almost against Oakland, Tennesee, and Kansas City. The only weak points, besides oodles of sacks, for our offense last year were short yardage plays and red zone TDs. TO could easily take care of both of those problems. Any time he is on the field he takes coverage away from others so even if he isn’t making the plays, Hines Ward is a lot less covered and Wallace/Miller get chances to make plays. The loss of Holmes will be felt and I question Mike Wallace’s ability to withstand intense coverage. Defenses will slide towards Mike, but with TO in town, defenses will have to respect a lot of targets and will fail to stop Ben from moving up the field. TO will be an asset to Pittsburgh and could elevate us from a team fighting to get into the playoffs into a championship contender. That is why I want TO to be a Steeler.
